It’s not often that we come across creative resumé ideas that endeavor to bring the maximum amount of skills to separate THE resumé to get the attention it deserves from, well, the rest. So we were quite excited to see how well Scott McFadden, a Pennsylvania based graphic designer student, not to forget singer and songwriter, condensed all of these skills and passions to transmit to the world what he has to offer.

Inspired by his graphic design professor, Scott began to think about ways to spotlight his resumé with a difference while at the same time always keeping in mind that whatever he portrays has got to be the real Scott McFadden demonstrating his creativity and values. The result is a well-fitted resumé half covering the body of an acoustic guitar. We get the initial impression that Scott doesn’t want to yell to us his academic or professional past, but his audience is instead treated to his personal melody presented on the platform of an instrument that touches many generations. That audience could well be the passer by on the nearest street corner captivated by Scott’s original song, except thanks to Scott’s work the audience is not narrowly confined to a the nearest neighborhood street corner but rather to an entire online public that is the web.

We truly get the feeling that the creativity and originality of the idea sings louder than the mere learning of how to put everything together using the pen and text tools in Photoshop! Scott has successfully tuned up his guitar to present his latest music single that could soon end up being a complete album.

So Scott, how did the idea of creating your own music resumé come about?

The inspiration for the resume came from advice I received from my graphic design professor on creating a good resume. “Think of your resume as if it is a person – what kind of introduction is it making? How would you introduce yourself?” With this in mind, I wanted my resume to feel like me, to give the same first impression that I would give to an employer in person. I am a graphic designer and a singer/ songwriter, and wanted my resume to emulate who I am and what I value.

What type of job are you hoping to land?

I’m a graduating Penn State senior this semester, and am in the process of applying to graphic design studios in the US.

Tell us more about the concept of your resumé…

The idea to physically design my resume on my guitar was to show that the way I think and problem solve is far more valuable than anything else I could show an employer. Anybody can learn how to use Photoshop, or Illustrator, or work with CSS or Javascript, or any of that. Those are simply some of the tools to design. The ability to think creatively, and more importantly, originally, is something special. I have experience and skills as a graphic designer, but I wanted to take the focus away from what I’ve done to what I’m capable of doing. I’m capable of creating unique work that engages people to interact with it. I’m capable of solving problems and getting people’s attention in original ways.

How did you initially share your resumé?

I designed this resume to send to a local studio. I haven’t heard back from them yet. The guitar was featured on Quipsologies (a huge honor) in March 2013, but I don’t plan to send this resume out to any other shops. Design is all about moving forward, continually pursuing the next even greater idea. I plan to use this project as part of my portfolio, but no other shop will physically receive a guitar resume. Those shops deserve something fresh, new, and exciting. I’m on to the next idea.
