It’s the feeling you too will get below from the interview we recently conducted with Adam.
Why did you choose to make an original creative resumé to find work?
Coming from a creative background and trying to land a creative job it just made sense. I wanted to showcase my “out of the box” thinking and give potential employers a little more insight into who I am. I think one of the most important things a hiring manager needs to do is place the right people and to do that the applicants need to mesh with existing teams and the workplace culture. By making this information readily available I save them and myself time. Sure, I may limit some opportunities but in the long run do I really want to work somewhere that doesn’t think I’m a good cultural fit for them?
How did you come across the idea and if I dare ask why Google?
I am primarily looking for a job as a Search Engine Marketer and I find I spend the majority of my time on Google. I wanted to do something that would set me apart from the rest, to express myself. I took Google and I made it mine, I made it work for me. No greater story here, no agenda, it was more out of respect than anything.
What was your main communication strategy to promote your search engine resumé?
I first went to reddit to get some real criticism on the whole concept. It’s a great place to basically throw your work to the wolves. I find that if you can’t take criticism in this industry and roll with the punches then you just may not be cut out for it. I received some positive and negative feedback, I was pleased enough with the results that I went back to the drawing board and improved the content. Getting maximum exposure was never a primary goal, of course it would be fun to be able to crash the server. None of that helps me accomplish the goal of landing the job I actually want however. I sent the website out to all my business contacts, passed it along to friends to share on social and contacted local television and radio stations to generate a bit of a buzz. It certainly doesn’t hurt but so far I have attracted the kind of attention I actually want by sending it to employers I actually want to work for.
How did you technically go about making your resumé?
Well, this may end up being a bit of a long-winded answer. Anyone that has ever been without a job knows how tough it is at times to stay focused. I’m the type of person that always needs a project or I go bananas, so I made this my job. I have a background in search engine optimization and web marketing so I put those skills to use to basically market my brand, me. I have optimized my site for certain keywords, by being featured on this blog and others I hope to manage some link building, I have created a PPC budget and have targeted select people in the industry that I hope will find my skills a match and my approach clever.
What type of role or job do you hope to land as a result ?
I am still looking at the time of this article but I do have some very strong leads. I am looking for a position in online marketing, either through paid search, social media, email or any combination of the 3.
Finally Adam, what would you say to a passing recruiter?
